What is TEFA(Texas Education Freedom Accounts)?

The TEFA program is in process of being established by the State of Texas Controllers Office.  The program is expected to launch in January for the 2026-2027 school year.  Currently, there are many rules being established and we will share these through our Open Houses above.

Here are a couple of things we do know that we can share:

  • TEFA is not a VOUCHER! Families would need to apply in order to be considered.  The application is expected to be available in January 2026.
  • The TEFA program is open to all Texas students from Pre-K - 12th grade, including those enrolled in a public, private or homeschool settings.
    • A student must be a U.S. Citizen, national, or lawful resident eligible to attend a Texas school
  • The TEFA program is expected to impact at least 80,000 students in the state.
  • All students accepted into the TEFA program are annually credited 85% of the average statewide funding (approximately $10,000) to their Texas Education Freedom Account.
  • If there are more applications than positions available, priority will go to:
    • Students with disabilities and a household income up to 500% of the federal poverty level

    • Lower-income families (earning up to 200% of the federal poverty level)

      • For a family of four, 200% of federal poverty level is $64,300

    • Moderate-income families (earning up to 200% and below 500% of the federal poverty level)

      • For a family of four, 200% - 500% of federal poverty level is $160,750

  • Once approved, there is no need to reapply each year.

  • Unused funds may roll over year to year with no rollover limit while the student participates in the program.

  • SO MUCH MORE INFORMATION TO COME!  STAY INFORMED
