What is TEFA?

The TEFA program was established by the State of Texas Controllers Office. The program launched this 2026-2027 school year.

Here are a couple of things we know:

TEFA is not a VOUCHER! Families need to apply in order to be considered. The application is expected to be available in January 2027.
The TEFA program is open to all Texas students from Pre-K - 12th grade, including those enrolled in a public, private or homeschool settings.
- A student must be a U.S. Citizen, national, or lawful resident eligible to attend a Texas school
If there are more applications than positions available, priority will go to:
- Students with disabilities and a household income up to 500% of the federal poverty level
- Lower-income families (earning up to 200% of the federal poverty level)
  - For a family of four, 200% of federal poverty level is $64,300
- Moderate-income families (earning up to 200% and below 500% of the federal poverty level)
  - For a family of four, 200% - 500% of federal poverty level is $160,750
Once approved, there is no need to reapply each year.
Unused funds may roll over year to year with no rollover limit while the student participates in the program.
