TODDLER MONTESSORI

“Free the child’s potential and you will transform him into the world.”

- Dr. Maria Montessori

IMG_0453.jpg

Our toddler classroom is a community which respects the independence and character of each child. Guides are calm, soft-spoken, patient, and trusting. Respect for the children is shown by using eye contact, kneeling to their level, addressing them by name. This soothing atmosphere creates an emotionally safe environment for those in our care.
Low shelves make learning materials accessible for the children. Materials in the toddler room foster concentration, problem solving, and a sense of achievement. The children select materials that interest them, use them as long as they like, and return them to the shelf, where they are ready for other children to use. Equipment that supports gross and fine motor skills is available. Child-sized furniture, utensils, and other tools enable children to make independent choices and complete activities, building self-confidence, concentration, and critical thinking skills.

Activities promote independence, order, coordination and concertation. In addition, they support social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. These learning activities include:

• Self-care: washing, dressing, toileting, and eating, according to each child’s individual capacity

• Large-motor activities (indoors and out): walking, climbing, running, jumping, balancing, and climbing steps

• Fine-motor skills: reaching, grasping, picking up and transferring objects, using tools and utensils, doing art work

• Language: naming objects, describing actions and intentions, discussing pictures, having conversations, listening to music, and singing

• Social skills: developing manners through interactions with peers, teachers, and adult-led small group games
