History of Mount St. Michael Catholic School

Mount St. Michael Catholic School enters its twenty-second year with the 2007-2008 school year. The school first opened as the Montessori School of God's Delight for ages two through six in 1977 in the basement of Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Oak Llawn. Sister Monica Marie Hibberd, O.S.U. served as director. In September 1981, through the generosity of the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity and Refuge, the Montessori School moved to the campus of Mount Saint Michael under Sister Mary Anne Tasker, O.L.C.

In September 1986 with the encouragement of Bishop Thomas Tschoepe, the Christian Community of God’s Delight* (CCGD) opened Prince of Peace Christian School for its families seeking a school that would reinforce the spiritual and moral formation taking place in the home. Grades 1 through 4 were opened in the first year under the administration of Dolores H. Costello. Each subsequent year grades were added until the initial eighth grade class graduated in 1990. The name was later changed to Mount St. Michael Catholic School to reflect its relationship to CCGD.

On May 11, 1995, Mount St. Michael Catholic School became a private school under the Catholic Diocese of Dallas at the request of Bishop Charles Grahmann. In May 1996, the school received Provisional Accreditation from the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops Education Department (TCCED). In 1999, the school was awarded full accreditation through TCCED.

The 2000-2001 school year began the transformation from a traditional curriculum to a Classical Curriculum. This curriculum in a faith-filled environment prepares students to think critically, problem solve creatively, choose ethically, and serve faithfully. For more information on our Classical Curriculum, go to the “Classical” page of the website.

Since the inception of Mount St. Michael Catholic School two other schools with the name “Prince of Peace” began. In conjunction with our twentieth anniversary on September 2, 2006, in an effort to alleviate confusion, and in an effort to make it easier for families to learn of our enriching educational opportunities, the leadership made a decision to change the name of the school. Through a discernment process and approval by Bishop Charles Grahmann, the school’s name was changed to Mount St. Michael Catholic School as of July 1, 2007.

Today, Mount St. Michael Catholic School is the only accredited Catholic Montessori (3K-K) and the only accredited Catholic Classical (1st-8th) school in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. It is also the only Catholic school in the area that offers daily Mass as part of the school day. Our graduates are successful in all of the Catholic high schools in Dallas as well as other private and public high schools. We are honored to have eight former students discerning vocations. We continue into a bright the future with our hope in the Lord remaining faithful to our uniquely personal, Catholic spirituality and witnessing to the Covenant of the Christian Community of God's Delight for our children and for those the Lord brings into our midst.
